You can just call me a “superfoodie”.

Increasingly, more and more people (myself included) are starting to experience the health benefits of superfoods, such as acai berries. Acai berries are considered one of the best superfoods out there due to their incredible antioxidant properties and are said to have MANY other health benefits.

The taste of acai berries, once processed and powdered, is often described as a fruity red wine flavor with chocolate overtones. Within the nutritional pulp and skin, acai berries are packed with antioxidants, amino acids, fiber, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals… making it a near perfect energizing fruit.

We recently bought these frozen acai & guarana packets from Sambazon. Spotted at our local Sprouts Farmers Market, these packets are super convenient! They come 4 to a bag and are already individually portioned, making it easy to just dump into your blender and go.

In addition to fresh bananas, this recipe also calls for some frozen fruit: namely, strawberries and peaches. Strawberries — all by themselves! — contain vitamin C, folate, potassium, manganese, fiber, and magnesium.

Peaches, too, are packed with nutrients. They offer a rich treasure of minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, phosphorous, zinc, and copper. Peaches are also low in calories, contain no saturated fat or cholesterol, and are a good source of dietary fiber as well.

Coconut water is my liquid of choice here. While you could easily just substitute it with regular water or your juice of choice, don’t underestimate the power of adding coco water to your smoothie! Coconut water may help lower blood pressure and potentially decrease the risk of blood clots forming in the arteries. It’s also effective at replenishing fluids and electrolytes after exercise… but a much better alternative to other sports beverages.

Finally… this wouldn’t be a Creamy Acai & Hemp smoothie without the last powerful ingredient: hemp. Hemp hearts are the most concentrated and balanced source of proteins, essential fats, and vitamins. At 10 grams of protein per 30-gram serving, they contain twice the amount of protein compared to flax or chia, and they’re lower in carbohydrates. Plus, we love their nutty taste!

We love these organic hemp hearts from Manitoba Harvest… but you can find almost any variety at your local health foods store or on Amazon.

On this particular day, I took this smoothie to work with me. One of my former roommates gifted me this EcoJarz lid a few years back, and it’s honestly one of the most convenient accessories in our kitchen. It can instantly turn any mason jar into a convenient, easy-to-transport beverage container!

Simply pour your favorite smoothie into a jar of your choice, and you’re good to go. Just don’t forget your reusable straw!

Creamy Acai & Hemp Smoothie

Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 32 oz (or two 16 oz smoothies)

Ingredients:

  • 2 bananas
  • 1/2 c. old-fashioned oats
  • 1 acai packet (roughly 100g acai)
  • 1/2 c. frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 c. frozen peaches
  • 1/2 c. hemp hearts
  • 1 c. coconut water

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in your blender. Blend until smooth, then serve and enjoy!
